Coal India, the world’s largest coal miner, said in a statement that it has issued a tender to import 2.42 million tonnes of coal by the end of September to boost fuel availability amid fears of a shortage. The power ministry last month directed the state-owned miner, which has little experience importing coal, to place orders for shipments from abroad.
According to the tender document, the company is looking for deliveries at power plants.
On Saturday, the company will issue another tender for delivery between July 2022 and June 2023.
The states had requested a total of 2.4 million tonnes, with some, like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, offering to import coal on their own.
