Indian medium and small-scale steel producers are feeling the pinch as the cost of essential inputs such as imported scrap steel and sponge iron continues to rise despite a decline in the price of finished steel.

These businesses, sometimes known as secondary steelmakers, produce steel in electric arc furnaces using sponge iron or scrap steel. Contrary to this, big, primary steel producers cleanse iron ore in blast furnaces before using it to make steel.
