According to a framework created by a panel from the education ministry for publicly funded higher education institutions, at least two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are planning to open campuses abroad, one in Tanzania and the other in the United Arab Emirates.
According to those with knowledge of the situation, discussions about similar plans at other institutes are in various stages.
K Radhakrishnan, the chairman of the IIT Council’s Standing Committee, led a 16-member panel that recently delivered its report to the ministry. To serve as a roadmap for necessary action, the ministry distributed a “concept note” on offshore campuses to all IIT directors last month.
